Job Overview:

Texas Monthly is seeking a full-time Design Manager to join their team as the primary creative resource for Sales, Marketing, and Promotions. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the Texas lifestyle — from BBQ, rodeo, and ranching to the great outdoors, music, and Texas-size style. They will get a front-row seat to develop the brand through print and digital outlets, and conceptualize new and inventive ways to align with strategic partners. He/she must possess a sophisticated design aesthetic, keen understanding of digital/print/environmental design.


To be a successful member of the Texas Monthly marketing team, the candidate must be a highly organized, self-directed seasoned designer and project manager with strong hands-on experience planning and executing creative materials in a variety of formats.


Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and manage a team of two (2) designers and one (1) project manager
  • Exhibit leadership qualities that inspire design expertise, innovation, and excellence
  • Mentor and develop the talents of the creative team
  • Research new and innovative marketing ideas, including but not limited to print, digital, and experiential extensions
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve across all areas
  • Harness and nurture the look-and-feel of our established brand identity
  • Create an array of print and digital pieces that range from interactive presentations, sell sheets, and event collateral to custom branded content and new product launches
  • See projects through from initial conception through to production and final execution
  • Produce and conduct photo and video shoots at a range of budget levels for custom content executions
  • Create budgets and timelines for all projects
  • Create press-ready mechanicals, collect files for output, review printer proofs for accuracy and ensure superior quality of executions
  • Create, edit and optimize interactive PowerPoint presentations for a variety of audiences
  • Manage the ideation, creation and delivery of:
    • PPT presentations (templates for customization)
    • Branding ads (print and digital)
    • High-impact custom ad units (print and digital)
    • Client ads (print and digital)
    • Branding design for events (including the overall look and event collateral)
    • Video and sizzle reels
    • Native Print and Digital Programs (advertorials)
    • Illustration and infographic creation
    • Motion graphic/animation creation


Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • BFA or BA in Graphic Design
  • 7+ years of experience in art direction and creative development
  • Sophisticated sense of typography with an attention to detail
  • Exceptional collaborative and interpersonal skills including being able to take direction/criticism, effectively sell/present your ideas and communicate eloquently to clients and stakeholders
  • Candidate must be extremely organized, a supportive team player, and be able to adapt to changing priorities
  • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrate good follow up and follow through
  • A good balance of pie-in-the-sky imagination and pragmatic hands-on ability
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work quickly without sacrificing quality in a deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and reverence for the needs of the business and that it influences what we do
  • A healthy obsession with emerging trends and web innovations that candidate shares with the team
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office on a Mac platform, and PowerPoint on a PC platform
  • Experience with WordPress, Dreamweaver, Flash, Aftereffects, HTML, and CSS and an appetite for expanding digital offerings
  • A strong and proven understanding of print production, including file prep and color correction
  • Having a network of relationships with third party companies, talent and vendors to produce content, such as videographers, photographers, designers, copywriters, stylists, musicians, tastemakers, etc., is a plus
  • A memorable portfolio that shows great collaborations
