Based in Washington DC, the Smithsonian Books Marketing internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about all aspects of book publishing while making meaningful contributions to book projects and building marketing, publicity, sales, and project management skills. The ideal candidate will be thoughtful, self-motivated, and academically inclined, with great attention to detail and the ability to work successfully as part of a team.

Smithsonian Books publishes narrative nonfiction books in categories where the Smithsonian’s authority is unparalleled, such as history, science and technology, and art. We also produce signature illustrated books based on our museums and collections.

Major Duties

  • Write and edit copy for press releases, marketing, publicity, and sales collateral, web content, and other special projects as assigned
  • Research and update media and publicity databases
  • Research potential special, corporate, and premium sales outlets
  • Maintain and update media, customer, and course adoption databases
  • Create and execute marketing and sales campaigns
  • Assist Director and Marketing Manager with marketing, publicity, and sales support
  • Help manage backlist sales for reprints and print on demand editions
  • Respond to requests about Smithsonian Books

  • Excellent communication skills; able to effectively express thoughts and ideas easily in groups and one-on-one
  • Media savvy–understands traditional media and social networks and how they relate to the marketing of Smithsonian Books
  • Professional, courteous manner
  • Ability to multi-task and complete complex projects in a timely manner

Education/Other Experience

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and PC platform

· BA or MA, or engaged in degree program for either

· 3.5 GPA

Internship Details

· 12 months in duration

· 16 hours a week, flexible schedule

· Unpaid internship; willing to work with candidates to achieve course credit
