Job Title: Editor in Chief - Program Publications

Position Summary:
The Editor in Chief, Program Publications leads and manages the overall research, conceptualization, creation (writing, editing and design), production, and publishing of multidisciplinary content related to program for diverse girls in grades K-12 across the country. She/he oversees a team engaged in creating the vision for all projects from conception to final product, including content development, specific uses of the products by councils/volunteers/girls in multiple venues, design, layout, and production. This position is instrumental in developing and implementing the turnkey programs and materials that define the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The incumbent creates and publishes program experiences that reflect current research on best practices in girls’ development and experiential education and that result in a measurable impact on the lives of girls at all age levels and from all populations.
The Editor in Chief collaborates closely with the Vice President-Program Development and the Director-Program Innovation to develop the overall Girl Scout program strategy and product architecture that defines core and supplemental programs, product lines, and alignment of awards in programs. In addition to the program strategy, the incumbent leads the overarching strategy for program-related products, creating a framework for development and delivery of a holistic portfolio of products by grade level (curricula, special products, badges, awards). She/he presents the product vision and plans to stakeholders: headquarters, council affiliates, advisory groups, and third-party vendors or partners. The Editor in Chief-Program Publications directs a multiplatform approach in creating and distributing materials for girls and adults, and promotes interactive engagement of girls, councils, and volunteers through varied delivery channels (linking print and Web resources) using technology that facilitates dialogue among headquarters, affiliates, girls, and volunteers.
Job Qualifications:
• Twelve years of leadership directing large-scale and multiple publishing projects and teams for youth markets, or equivalent experience in editorial management preferred, with emphasis on progressive experience regarding scope and scale of projects and teams
• Minimum 5 years of leadership/supervisory experience managing, directing and coaching staff, budget development, and management
• Demonstrated superior writing and editing skills for various formats
• Demonstrated experience in youth development practices and experiential education, including expertise in recognizing editorial excellence in resources for girls K-12 to provide a foundation of knowledge about how young girls grow and develop
• Expertise creating multiplatform strategies to engage children and youth (interaction between print and Web), with experience in electronic media desirable
• Demonstrated experience in conducting virtual opportunities for stakeholder input, feedback, etc., using technology such as e-communities, chat groups, etc., highly desirable
• Experience leading a production environment for both print and Web, with experience overseeing design work including obtaining and facilitating the work of freelance designers, etc.
• Demonstrated written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including experience making presentations for large and diverse audiences
• Demonstrated experience in managing multiple resources simultaneously under changing priorities and tight deadlines
• Experience establishing and maintaining a network of freelancers and contractors
• Demonstrated experience with product/market research and field testing desirable
• Travel up to 30 percent of the time, involving day trips, overnight travel or weekends, when required
• Valid driver’s license to drive to various geographic locations
• Master’s degree in journalism, education, or related area preferred, or equivalent relevant experience
